chicago fine-art & photojournalism family photographers | life is an adventure

Friday, December 30th, 2011

Oh boy what a fun few days I had visiting a good friend in McGregor, Iowa.  We’ve been trying to coordinate this trip for weeks now and something has always come up, and then one day something different happened.  I was reading an article on “Six tips from your future self” that I came across on facebook and last of these wise informational tidbits said -

6. Passing up opportunities. The elders much more strongly regret things they didn’t do than what they did. As a 73-year-old told me: “The lesson I learned is that it really pays to say yes unless you’ve got a really solid reason to say no. Life is an adventure, but to take advantage of it, you have to say yes to things.”

I called up my friend right away and said hey I know this is totally on a whim and crazy but how about I come out tomorrow morning?

Seriously Shannon and her family are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, her boys are an absolute riot (I joked that I was going to have a 6-pack by the time I left because I couldn’t stop laughing).  The second morning I set my alarm for 7am and when it went off I tossed it aside, thinking how much better sleeping until 9 or 10 sounded.. a minute later I heard snickering and whispering at the door teehehehheeee is she sleeping? tehhehehe i can see her! teteeteehhheehehe I turned over to see them standing in the door.  One of them asked “Suzy do you want me to turn the light on?”

(me) “Ummm, no -”

(light turns on, boys start laughing and screaming, I sit straight up and rub my eyes)

“Woow you have really bad hair”

“Yes I’m always a little scary looking in the morning” and then I pull myself out of bed, laughing that this must be one of those crazy parenthood moments.  You know, those things that drive you bonkers but then when your kids go off to college you miss them like crazy.  I don’t particularly like getting forced out of bed at 7am when I don’t have to be up that early but for some reason it felt really good being woken up by those loud, wild, and goofy boys :)

A few highlights of the trip included an ugly Christmas sweater party, a TrueBlood season 4 marathon  (yep we’re totally obsessed), snuggling with their part human-part dog Tess (she is seriously the most loving and affectionate dog I’ve ever met), the white chocolate lattes Shannon’s husband Wyatt made me every morning, a visit from baby Emmett’s family, watching the boys showoff their marshmallow shooters, being able to wave to every person we drove by (reminds me of my time in Harbor Springs, I just love that about small towns), and an impromptu family/pregnancy session since baby Dodd #3 is due in less than a month.  Though I must be honest that it was one of the funniest afternoons ever lol  I’ll spare you the craziness that happened in between but I can show you the end result.  Sometimes kids just want to run and play so if that’s the case, I just throw all plans to the wind and try to keep up with my camera.  I kind of prefer it that way anyhow ;)

(on a side note, can you flippin’ believe that I took these pictures on the third to last day of the year?!  I know I can’t)

Also I find a sweet irony in the photos below since Willem (below) said to me when I first met him,

“Suzy why are you here?”

“Well, I’m here to hang out with your mom and we’re gonna take some pictures and -”

“Oh no… I hope you’re not doing them for our family.”

Moms are really good at wiping dirt off your pants :)

And then the next morning, despite gloomy weather and a migraine, we took a few portraits in Shannon’s studio right before I left for home :)

Can’t wait to meet baby Dodd #3 soon!! :)

chicago pregnancy & newborn baby photographers | baby E

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

This is the second time now that a couple has revisited Vasili and I for a baby session after photographing their wedding, seriously how cool is that?! (remember their amazing wedding last year at the Intercontinental hotel on Michigan Ave?)  I especially loved seeing these two grow their family as I remember thinking how wonderful of a mom this bride would be after she spent most of her wedding day taking such good care of her nieces.  Not only did I get to meet their little guy just one week after his birth day but I also got to document their journey to parenthood with a maternity session at the end of summer (or is September considered the beginning of fall? Ahh time just escapes me!).  Baby E is sooo unbelievably cute and while he definitely gave us a good run for our money, when it was all said and done he did a great job!

Thank you so so much to E and his family for inviting us out to capture his journey to the world, can’t wait til’ the next time! :)

chicago family & baby photographers | snowfall during a shoot….

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

…. is like winning the lottery.  If you book a winter session with us you really never know if we’ll catch a day that’s cold enough for the frost to cover the trees but warm enough to go outside, a powdery snowfall to dust the ground, or even better an actual snowfall – but that always seems to be the hope.  In fact, most times it’s so unpredictable that you don’t even know it’s going to happen until the day of and even then, will it happen at the same time you’ve scheduled your session?   But despite the rare odds, that’s exactly what happened for this family.  When I woke up the day of William’s 3 moth session (remember him as a newborn?) I literally gasped as I looked out the window to find that it was snowing.  And not just any snow but the absolute best kind.  The kind where the snowflakes are big and fluffy, and happens when it’s the warmest it can be for snow to even occur (I’d say about in the upper 30′s/low 40′s).  We didn’t stay out too long but just enough to enjoy a stroll through the park and then headed to a local green house to keep warm.  After finding sanctuary among the greenery, we headed back home to spend time with Naismith & Shiloh and of course finished up with nap time (I just can’t resist catching the little ones when they fall fast asleep!).

Anyway thank you so much to William’s family for inviting me out to capture him at 3 months, I’m so excited to spend the next year watching you grow :) (and if you are interested in being put on an ‘on-all-list’ for when it snows and I’m looking for a family to shoot outside with, email me at info@simplybysuzy.com with the subject titled SNOW ON-CALL WAIT LIST)

Oh gosh where do I even begin with this couple and their wedding… well for one, by far probably our favorite wedding of the year and hands down if we were giving out ‘Best Of..’ awards they’d surely win for Best Reception. EVER.  When I first met this couple I vividly remember sitting at the Starbucks on Roosevelt and State Street almost two years ago with sweaty palms lol Nervous what they would be like…. would they like our work… more importantly, would they like me?  When they showed up we talked for a little bit about us and them, and the details of their wedding.  They told me how they were considering calling up the Tribune and hiring one of their photojournalists to make the point that in terms of photography they just wanted a real and honest story telling of their wedding day.  I’m so glad that they decided to work with Vasili and I because I truly can’t imagine our lives without knowing them.  Whether it’s photographing a wedding, a birth or a family, I don’t think people understand how much of a deep connection us photographers build with clients as we literally get to know them, their friends & family inside and out through their life’s biggest moments.  After working with Angi & Jason, I can honestly say that both they and their loved ones are not only incredibly good people but also now very dear friends of ours and we love any chance we get to see them beyond our professional relationship.

A few things that stuck out for me from their wedding -

* Their daughter seriously is the sweetest little person I’ve ever met.  In the morning while everyone was getting ready, she kept showing off her stuffed dog Spots who loooves to model ;)  At one point she came up to me and tugged on my shirt, leaned in and whispered to me “Um, you’re a really nice lady.”  Yep, officially Ana you’ve won over my heart.

* Unlike any other wedding this year, I can remember a lot of the music that played throughout each moment of the reception.  I’ve included a few below, nothing like a good song to really bring you back to a memory.

* The bride sent over a present (a watch, see the first photo below) to the groom, delivered by Ana of course.  Vasili is really into watches and couldn’t stop gabbing about how cool the gifted time piece was (hint much? ha)

* The wind that day was unreal.  Don’t believe me? Take a look (below) at how big the waves were in Lake Michigan compared to the cars on Lake Shore Drive.

* Not really sure what else to say about the entire bridal party other than they were pretty amazing.  Any group that is fun, friendly, respectful and encourages us to have a few drinks and get on the dance floor with them is pretty awesome in my book.

Anyway, here are but a few of our favorites from their big day.  Thank you sooo much Angi, Jason & Ana for not only letting us be a part of your big day but for being such good friends.  We can’t wait to come back for your next session with us ;) (also a BIG thank you to my good friend Julia for helping us out with photographing this wedding. We love you and always appreciate your friendship!)

Bridal Beauty Chicago took care of the bridal party’s hair and make-up.  I know what you’re thinking and yes I totally agree! ‘They are amazeballs and I have to have them make me look that gorgeous too!!’

Butterflies were with everyone throughout the entire day and night :)

The candle lit ceremony was so romantic and SO Angi & Jason.  The rose petal details down the aisle were also the perfect touch to add to the simple elegance that the bride and groom wanted (designed by 3C Event Design)

I love this picture because I don’t think Angi’s smile could have been any bigger

Just like the ceremony, I think the reception was so Angi & Jason – the perfect evening soirée in the city.  Between the rose petal details, the beautiful crimson red accents throughout the room, the gorgeous printed details for the table center pieces and place settings (of which were designed by my favorite Debi Lilly from A Perfect Event) and the insanely good view atop the W hotel’s Altitude Lounge… it was simply to die for.

We really wanted to create a film-like effect to their images while telling the story of their wedding to reflect what we know about the bride and groom’s style – classic and never outdated (Vasili’s shot below of Angi & Jason during their first dance is my favorite image either of us have ever taken at a wedding!)

I have no idea why but I particularly remember this song playing while I shot the image below. I’m tellin’ ya, it was the party of the year for us.

haha his image (above) cracks me up every time! Nothin’ like a sad clown to put a smile on your face.

Did I not tell you the view out the W hotel Lakeshore’s Altitude Room is insanely amazing?

Oohh and I almost forgot.. at the very end of the wedding before we left, we impulsively decided to hop into Angi & Jason’s photobooth and add a little something to their guest book :)

chicago family photographers | holly trolley.

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Remember Lucy and her family?  A couple months ago Lucy’s mom invited me to come along on a Holly Trolley lights tour around downtown with her family meet-up group and I’m so glad I said yes!  Shamefully I can’t say I’ve ever done any of these touristy things or tours around the city, despite having lived here my whole life… so even being a born and raised Chicagoan it was all still new and shiny to me.  When I first met the group at Big & Little’s I was actually really nervous and so shy to introduce myself, but it didn’t take longfor me to feel so comfortable with everyone (how could you not when you’re surrounded by adorable, chubby & squishy smiling faces? see exhibit A below).

We first stopped by Michigan Avenue to see Water Tower Place and grab some hot chocolate at the Hershey’s store, then drove down Lake Shore Drive and past the Zoo’s annual Christmas display, and finishing up with a visit to the Daly Plaza & State Street.  I had no idea that Daly Plaza turned into a little European village at night during the holiday season – there were lots of European fare, hot spiced wine (of which I am absolutely planning on going back to get some with Vasili!), free pictures with Santa for the kids and people from all walks of life gathered around.   I wish that I could somehow transmit a smell through my computer screen, it was unbelievable the medley of aromas!  Anyway, here are a few of my favorites from my night with this bunch.  Thank you so much again to Lucy’s mom for inviting me to hang out with you and all of your friends, very much looking forward to the next time :)

If you or someone you know is having a fun group outing and don’t mind a friendly yet quiet photographer tagging along to capture the story of what’s going on, feel free to shoot me an email and if I have the time I’d love to come (and if there’s food involved I’m already there ha!)

Recognize this gorgeous mom?  Was so delightfully surprised to run into another past client of ours on the tour!

And last but not least, one of my favorite images from the night.. As we were waiting for the remaining families to get back to the trolleys I noticed one of the dad’s comforting his little one, swaying back and keeping them warm. Ahh the little things…
