Vasili and I are SO excited to photograph this couple’s upcoming June wedding.  We originally had planned on meeting up for a little engagement session and time to hang out recently, but unexpected plans called for us to reschedule.  And though we changed our plans for but 3 weeks later, it went from being snowy and cold out, to 80 degrees and spring blossoms starting to bloom (talk about a total upgrade).  So we walked around Evanston for a bit, chatting about wedding plans and the amazing weather.. living in the city vs living in the suburbs.. and pretty much just getting to know what great people Denise & Josh are.  Needless to say we can’t wait to see them again for our next session together ;)

This morning I woke up at the crack of dawn for a mini-session on the beach with good friends (despite the nasty weather we’ve been having today, we totally caught the most gorgeous sunrise!).  We walked along the beach until we found a little path leading us to the lakefront and an insanely good view of the city, and then stopped by Ipsento afterward for some chit chat and warming up – if you’re a local Chicagoan, the nutella latte is to die for.

With the exception of a few holiday card orders, I am completely caught up on my to-do list.. something I haven’t been able to say in almost 2 years yowza! So with that being said, I’m off to relax with friends and enjoy myself this weekend :) (I hope you do the same!)

Before Katy and I ever even met in-person I already felt like we were two peas in a pod…

She’d ask, “Want to meet early morning?”… ”Yes! I’m totally a morning person!”

I’d say, “I love coffee.. want to grab Caribou?” … “Me too!”

That’s pretty much how most of our conversation topics went, just short of finishing each other’s sentences lol  Aside from the fact that I was so excited to work with Katy, I was totally eager to shoot hers and Matt’s wedding because it was scheduled to be the perfect fall-day ceremony outside on the lawn of the Lake Forest Armour House  which is one of my favorite venues.   Instead of an engagement session we decided to have more of a ‘beloved session’ post-wedding which I think was way more fun anyway ;)  We went back to the place that they had just said their vows at not long and walked around the grounds, talked about their amazing honeymoon, and enjoyed the gorgeous fall foliage.  Per my last e-session post, I thought I’d have Katy tell you all about their proposal story for herself :)

THEIR PROPOSAL

“Matt’s grandparents had invited me to join their side of the family for Christmas, in Virginia Beach.  I was flattered and immediately said, “YES!”  Realizing what I had done, I doubled checked with my mom to make sure that was okay.  She smiled and said, ” Of course, but you will be very missed.”

Matt and I are very playful and like to tease each other, especially about who gives the most gifts at Christmas, or who is getting the most expensive gift/gifts. And in usual fashion we were teasing one another days before leaving for Virginia.  I had told him that I definitely win for most money spent this year.  He said that I could be getting a really really expensive gift this year and that he would win.  Then, I decided to blurt out, “ An engagement ring is not a Christmas gift.”  Matt said “Yes it is!  It’s a gift!”.  To which I replied, “Okay it’s a gift, but not a Christmas gift..it’s a I-love-you-so-much-will-you-spend-the-rest-of-your-life-with-me-gift!”.  So after that I thought don’t plan on getting engaged this year!

Getting to Virginia Beach was not the best travel experience that year…  Matt and I didn’t get to sit with each other on the plane… we sat on the runway for 45minutes waiting for the snow storm to calm down… we had a connection in Detroit that we had to run as fast as we could to make…  I think we had something like 7 minutes to get to the other end of the airport.  I felt like I was in the movie Home Alone, frantically running for our flight.  Thank God we made it!  And landed in Virginia Beach at 12;15 am on Christmas Eve.  We got to Matt’s grandparents house and slept.

That morning we got up and visited for a little bit.  Then, Matt asked me if I wanted to go see the Virginia Beach board walk.  We hopped in the car and drove down to the beach.  It looked like it was a beautiful day..clear sky, the sun was shining!  I wore a light jacket, pretty scarf..I was at the beach, right? Wrong!  We both dressed way too light.  It was 45 degrees and windy…bbuurrr.  I put my scarf over my head, tied it like a babushka and zipped my coat over it.  We wanted to walk down to Poseidon..king of the sea.  Sixteen blocks later we made it!  The two of us were standing there holding each other close saying sweet things.  I was thinking he loves me soooooo much because I came to Virginia for Christmas.  He had just finished saying how happy he was and how much he loved me.  And that he had brought me here for a reason.  I thought,”Holy crap! Is this, like, the moment?!”.  And it was!  He pulled away from me..got down on one knee..took my right hand and started saying more sweet things.  I, smoothly, took back my right hand, and gave him my left.  He continued with the sweetness..and then popped open that magic box and said,”Will you marry me?”  Of course I said YES!!!  I even think I was nodding yes during the proposal!  I’m so lucky to have found such an incredible man to share my life with!”

When I first met Kendall we were both in the maternal/child health program at the UIC School of Public Health.  Her warm spirit and kind heart instantly made me love her!  A few years later, I was delighted to hear that not only had she gotten engaged but that she wanted Vasili and I to be there to capture their wedding which will take place next May by their home in Michigan.  For their engagement photos, we decided to do something here in Chicago to really get that city feel to their images.  Somehow I neglected to realize that the day of our session was scheduled for the first day of the Air and Water Show so we decided to meet really early in hopes of missing the 2+ million people that crowd around downtown and the lakefront.  It seriously could not have worked out any better as we were able to not only roam around the city unbothered but as I was driving back home the sun disappeared and it began to rain.

HOW HE PROPOSED

We had planned to go to a nice dinner for Sweetest Day last year (10/16/10), but after curling my hair and putting on my brand new heels, we realized that neither of us had made a reservation and the earliest we’d be able to sit down for dinner was 10pm.

So, we decided to go to a haunted hay ride and corn maze in Mason, MI.  Kevin had been asking me to go there for weeks, but I kept refusing since I hate haunted things.  But we didn’t have any other plans.  I changed into jeans and a sweatshirt and Kevin took an especially long time cleaning his car (I now know he was talking to my dad on the phone).

We waited in line for the hay ride for over an hour, and after embarrassing myself in front of a bunch of teenagers because I was so scared, we went in the “non-haunted” corn maze.  Since everyone else was in the haunted corn maze, we had the maze to ourselves and got lost several times.  We were being silly and running around in all the wrong directions.  At one point I turned around and Kevin was standing there with a ring!  The sinking mud we were standing in prevented him from being able to get down on one knee, but the proposal was so sweet and absolutely perfect.

Kevin had planned on proposing in the corn maze for weeks, which is why he kept asking me to go.  If I hadn’t kept turning down his offer to go on the haunted hay ride, we might’ve been engaged sooner!

Thank you so much Kendall & Kevin for hanging out with me for a few hours and making it an awesome morning!  Vasili and I can’t wait to be there on your big day next year :) (only 6 months already!!!)
