Aside from being probably one of the prettiest babies we’ve ever worked with, sweet Hollis’ name is also among my top favorites (next to Harper Adelaide.. hmm, I’m thinking I see a daughter with an “H” name in my future..? ;) ).

A little past the usual 6-10 day time frame for a newborn photography session at just a few weeks old, Hollis reminded me why I love working with babies of all ages as I couldn’t get enough of her big alert eyes. You’ll see what I mean when you check out some of my favorites below from our time together :)

And while complete sleep deprivation from working overtime these past few weeks has me a little less mouthy than usual, my posts wouldn’t be complete without thanking Hollis and her mom & dad immensely  for being so much fun to spend time with and for allowing us the honor of capturing your new lives together!  Until next time.. XO

chicago newborn photographers | the simple things.

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

One of my favorite moments during newborn sessions is when parents think that we’re not photographing them anymore, and the pressure to perform and pose seems to wither away.  At the start of my photography endeavors I spent so much time perfecting my technical skills, lighting, posing… now I find myself shifting toward learning how to master the art of getting people to relax, perfecting the art of ‘anti-posing’ if you will.  There is truly something to be said about the difference between a real smile and a fake smile – allowing your subject to just be in order to observe a genuine reaction of surprise or love.  Henri Cartier-Bresson once said (and thank you to Deb Schwedhelm for putting this post together and reminding me of how amazing and inspirational Henri is)

“The most difficult thing is a portrait. Who is it? What is it?
You have to be like a cat. and not disturb.
A person doesn’t react the same way when he’s not studied.
You see them stripped naked in a photograph.”

I love the sleepy, dreamy, curled up baby work that I do and I don’t think it will ever go out of style but I find myself wanting to give you even more.  I’ve started to give a lot of thought lately as to what my clients might truly want to remember when their babies are no longer babies anymore and they are waving them off to college…  so when we’re setting up before a session or even taking a break in between, I ask mom and dad what are their favorite things about their little ones? How is being a parent different or similar to what they expected?  Being a good photographer is more than just clicking the camera.. it’s watching, listening, feeling, acting.

While at a recent session with twins, mom was feeding one of her boys as we were taking a lunch break.  I can’t remember exactly how we got there but I mentioned a conversation with a past client who told me her baby had grown so much she constantly needed to lift the folds in their neck & chin in order to clean the milk that would get stuck in there.  The punch line of the story being that if this extra cleaning wasn’t done, the milk would inevitably turn into what she called “neck cheese” lol!  The mom that sat in front of me looked down at her own little one and chuckled… I imagine a moment of humorous self-reflection…if only her past-self knew that one day her heart could ever melt over neck cheese.  She told me how when baby G would feed he would latch off and have milk all over his face and dribbling down his cheeks as well.  A mundane experience, a simple statement lost in our conversation… until at the end of our session when we were doing family photos and baby G needed a break to feed again.  As we hung out for a few moments I looked down and noticed the milk dribbling from his mouth just like his mom had described to me earlier that day.  Before she could wipe the droplets away I grabbed my camera and let myself be present in her moment so that she could remember this one day when she’s waving him off to college…

Even when we know nothing about the world around us, we already know that love feels good :)

chicago newborn photographers | belly stickers & kisses

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Newborn sessions are always a treat for me but I had an especially fun time the other day shooting alongside a friend who was visiting Chicago for a newborn session and kind enough to invite me along (she is an amazing newborn, baby and family portrait photographer based out of Iowa).  In addition to photographing baby’s first moments, capturing the love between a newborn and other members of the family such as older siblings is such a joy for us photographers.  Though personally fulfilling, it is almost never easy lol  I mention this aspect of a newborn session because, being the second shooter yesterday, my varied perspective reminded me of this as I watched Shannon work with baby E’s older sister Josie.

At first she asked little Josie to give her brother a big ole’ kiss right “there!” on his forehead… in typical toddler fashion, Josie politely declined.

Maybe whispering secrets down a telephone chain to Josie will do the trick…

… though it certainly got the biggest, heart-warming smile on her face, she coyly declined again our request to snuggle up with baby E.  Perhaps some stickers will work.

After putting stickers on her belly and Shannon’s forehead (whom I give extra kudos to – a good photographer will always oblige a request that will make a toddler happy.. even if it involves a little self-deprecation lol!), we finally got Josie to lay a big smooch on her baby brother.  Whether it be stickers or treats, bribery is always a great plan B for getting siblings under the age of 5 to cooperate if mom and dad are okay with it.

… and after it’s all said and done, the end result is always worth the extra effort :)

chicago newborn photographers | sweet lily pie

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

With pleasure I welcome another Bump Club cutie – meet sweet little 2-month old Lily!  Although Vasili and I normally do our newborn sessions between 5-10 days after birth, when Lily’s mama first contacted us about trying our usual ‘sleepy, dreamy baby session’ I was both excited and nervous because obviously there is a huge difference between a week old newborn and a 2-month old baby.  We’re always up for a challenge so we said of course we would give it a try!  Not only did Lily sleep nice and soundly for us during our time together but being a touch older allowed us to have even more fun with the family portion of it, her personality was really shining through!  I’m convinced that even at 2 months old, Lily LOVED having her photograph taken.   Check out a sneak peek of our time together that day and I’d say the proof is in the puddin’ judging by Lily’s big smiles :)
