chicago family & baby photographers | emails that make me smile

Friday, January 11th, 2013

A few days ago I had a really, really fun newborn photography session with a family of four.  And then this morning I got the sweetest email in my inbox from mom, who sent me a picture of her toddler ‘photographing’ her new baby sister..

“I want to take pictures of baby sister like Suzy!” is one of the captions that accompanied the photo.

Despite popular belief, it is not always easy being a small business owner.  In fact, behind the beautiful blog posts and the seemingly glamorous Facebook status updates of ‘what we’re up to,’ are a lot of 80 hour weeks and sleepless nights, many days where I give up spending time with my family & friends so I can personally deliver items to a client’s home or take the extra time to work on an order that probably could wait until the morning.. so even just a simple thank you note or taking a few moments to email me about how much your kids had fun at the session.. truly those small gestures are the ones that keep me going and are so beyond appreciated xoxoxo

chicago film photographers | it’s cool to be square

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

For Christmas my parents got me a Rolleiflex camera and book of some Vivian Maier work (a nanny from Chicago who documented her life from her Rollei)..

… and I just got back the first images I took with her.  Not bad, I must say! But it will for sure require some practice with the focus..  Typically cameras have a viewfinder you look through with your eye, but what’s neat about the Rollei cameras is that it has a waist level viewfinder.  This pretty much just means you pop open the top, and let the camera hang at your waist (kind of like how Vivian is holding it in the picture above) and look down as you compose/focus.  It is pretty fun to try something different, but also feels quite strange to me.. again, it will for sure require some practice and getting used to it more.

What I love the most about the Rollei though is the square format.  There is just something I really love about square images and the composition it allows you to work with (so think 5×5, 10×10, 12×12, 20×20 prints up on your wall).

Anyway here are the few shots I took that actually turned out :) And if you have a cooperative subject (an immobile baby, a child who will take my direction, or even you and your spouse..) you just might see me pull this baby out and take some photos of you with it :)

chicago fine-art film baby photographers | cupid’s bow.

Oh little Miss Eva.  I had the pleasure of meeting her earlier this month while on a trip to Iowa to visit some photographer friends of mine (including Eva’s mama who is an amazing photographer based in NY!).  It was so much fun to spend time with her and brush up on my portrait skills since most of what I do is fine-art/lifestyle work.  I was especially thankful that we were able to capture her having a little skin to skin time with mom and can’t wait to add some of the images to a breastfeeding project I’m working on for HealthConnect One this National Breastfeeding Awareness month in August.  Anyway these were a few of my faves :) Thanks again Jess & Eva for letting me photograph you and I can’t wait for the next time we meet up again! XO

(EDIT: due to the many people who have asked about Eva’s outfits, the diaper cover and pink outfit/hat set are by EGG baby which is also carried locally by Urba Baby in Chicago. I highly recommend any parent check out EGG baby for clothing ideas for your simply by suzy session!)

chicago family photojournalism | i love your happy face and your sad face.

Monday, September 26th, 2011

I had the BEST time getting to know this family better last month as we had a session to capture their sweet little Lucy.  We started off watching the sun rise at the beach, we walked over to the park to finish up and then I followed them back home for story time before putting Lucy down for her afternoon nap.  I think my favorite moment of the day was during story time when mom was reading a book to Lucy about how she will love her for the rest of her life, no matter what – she will love her happy face, and even love her sad face (though after our time together it seems Lucy only has a happy face lol).  It was also a book about acceptance of others and not judging your peers for the circumstances of which they come from or the choices they make about their life. It’s okay to need some help, it’s okay to be a different color, it’s okay to talk about your feelings, it’s okay to make a wish.. I thought to myself, what a great message to send to your little ones every day :)

Anyway, here were some of my favorites from our morning together.  Thank you so much to Lucy and her family for not only waking up at the crack of dawn to enjoy the beautiful sunrise with me, but for also letting me be a part of your family, even if but for a few hours :)

chicago lifestyle family photographers | we all scream…

… for ice cream (photos!), or so this little guy’s mom would say :)

One of the best parts about my job is getting to literally watch families be created and grow over time and this family in particular I’ve had the pleasure of being there to capture from the very beginning.  I first documented their life and love before baby Graham was even born; I watched him take his very first breath in the wee hours of a snowy, winter night; Vasili and I photographed him as he slept through peaceful dreams at one week old;  I helped him welcome his first spring at 3 months and now again at 6 months old I returned to enjoy ice cream with him and his family on (well, what was supposed to be) a hot summer day at the beach.  It wasn’t quite a hot summer day but what we got was even better – an empty beach after the rain.  The wind was so crazy I honestly wasn’t sure how the session would go, but turns out torrential winds make Graham the happiest boy on earth.  And if you don’t believe me just check out his big gummy smiles for yourself.

Thank you so much to this family for not only making it one of the best and most fun days I’ve had in a while, but for allowing me the honor, blessing and privilege of capturing their sweet little guy as he ventures through his first year of life.  See you soon for a fall day at month 9!
