“We need never be ashamed of our tears” -Charles Dickens, Great Expectations

My favorite images always seem to be pretty unconventional. Maybe that’s because I’m not a mom yet? Maybe it’s the weird artist in me? Maybe it’s my inner desire to push everyone’s ideas of what is actually beautiful?

Whatever it is, this picture happens to be one of those favorites. There is something about it that makes me feel a sort of quiet peacefulness despite the obvious wails of poor Sienna as I was taking it.

And the tears. Oh, the tears.. they are so raw and real, an emotion we can all relate to and for both happy and sad memories…

When my best friend Hammie the hamster died; when I fell in love for the first time and when I fell in love for real for the first time; when I crashed my purple (yes, purple) 96′ Saturn carelessly into a fire hydrant as a teenager; when I officially graduated and got my Masters degree … (and so on, and so on..)

But despite how or why or when we have them, I think the best part about capturing these kinds of moments is that when your kids look back on them they wont ever think to themselves “Boy did I really want my paci that day…” They’ll only be reminded that they had a mom, dad, or big brother or sister who was always there to make their tears go away xo

Just a few photos of the flowers someone sent me to say thank you just a few weeks ago..

I think we can all agree that it’s these small gestures that mean so much, and they always seem to come at a time when you need them the most. So, thank you to the person who sent these to me.. not only did they brighten up my apartment but they brightened up an otherwise not-so-bright day.

And I urge you (yes, YOU, the person reading this) to think of one small gesture that you can do today to say thank you to someone in your life and do it – even if it’s but a handwritten note thanking a friend for inviting you out to dinner the other night :)

Oh and my favorite, Pistil & Vine off of Damen Ave in Chicago, is responsible for putting together such a beautiful arrangement <3

.. Vasili.

About a month ago, when Vasili and I both had a night off and we were trying to think of what we should do together, he said to me, “Let’s pull out the crock pot and learn how to use it, just for fun.”

Um, excuse me? The crock pot? Just for fun?!

This then spiraled a series of thoughts and realizations that after five years together, I am definitely guilty of taking him and all of his wonderfulness at least a tiny bit for granted.  I mean, I deeply care for him and trust me I know what kind of golden goose egg he is.. but just like every other person, it’s so easy sometimes to overlook just how special the things and people are right in front of you and focus on what you don’t have or what you don’t get.  In fact one of the things that underlies most of our arguments is that we both are guilty of judging what the other person says and does based on what that means in our own world.  For example, I often have questioned in the past just how much he cares for me simply because he doesn’t tell me it all the time, or that he thinks I look nice or how special I am to him.. (all the women out there, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.. lol) but what I’ve come to realize is that he doesn’t have to say it because he does things all the time that show me instead.

Like how he routinely juggles 2 jobs and still makes time to help me at my newborn sessions and weddings..

Or how he spent last Christmas with me and my family in a hospital all day cheering up my dad and helping him learn how to walk again..

And when he put a big smile on his face just for me when I wanted a photo session of us this summer..

I am beyond grateful that Vasili always supports my dreams, and in fact he often puts them before his own..  I love the fact that he helped me to take care of three little ducks like newborn babies in our apartment instead of getting upset at me for not heeding his advice that they were far more work than I thought .. I love how excited he gets about photographing storms and I can always find him with the tripod set up when the clouds are rumbling in .. I love that he loves good food as much as I do and often surprises me with dinners or breakfasts to celebrate ‘just because’.. I am grateful that he’s always there for me and my family.. I am thankful that Vasili’s family is as loving and wonderful as he is..  and most of all, I am so grateful that Vasili loves me unconditionally. I am not perfect, and in fact, I often feel very broken inside.  And when those less than perfect parts of myself have surfaced, he has never turned and run the other way. He always loves me, even through the ugly and bad, and I have him to thank for the person I am today and the person I am still becoming.

chicago film baby photographers | mommy & me.

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

The other week these two were sweet enough to meet me in the park for some play time and photos.  I’ve been doing a lot of these impromptu ‘mommy & me’ mini-sessions, I just absolutely love them.

And looking through these film scans I’m also reminded of how often baby boys look like adorable little old men hehe Perhaps this Shel Silverstein poem explains it best:

“You know the stork bring babies,
But did you also know
He comes and get the older folks
When it’s their time to go?

Zooms right down and scoops them up,
Then flaps back out the door
And flies them to the factory where
They all were made before.

And there their skin is tightened up,
Their muscles all are toned,
Their wrinkles all are ironed out,
They’re given brand-new bones.

Ol’ bent backs are straightened up,
New teeth are added too,
Tired hearts are all repaired
And made to work like new.

Their memories are all removed
And they’re shrunk down, and then
The stork flies them back down to earth
As newborn babies again.”
