chicago baby & child photographers | new studio.

Sunday, March 24th, 2013

What do you do on a cold as heck day and you got nothing to do? Drive 2 hours to go to see your friend’s bright, warm new studio of course.

My good friend Laurie just opened up a brand-spanking new photography studio and I am so happy for her (you may remember THIS session of when baby Noah was born last fall). It was just as beautiful as I had imagined, and of course in between coffee and chit chat my camera was seduced by sweet Tessa once again.

Anyway thanks Laurie for having me over for the day, and can’t wait to see you guys again soon! xoxo

chicago film family photographers | soul.

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

UGH. Please tell me, all you mamas out there pushing it through morning sickness, how the heck do you do it for weeks on end?!  Seriously, you all deserve a medal because I’ve had a bad case of the stomach flu for just the last few days and it.is.the pits (yes, I am totally that person who turns into a whiny baby when I’m sick).  Thankfully, though, I’m starting to feel a little better today and thought I’d celebrate by getting some work and much-needed blogging done (I’m a real party animal).

I decided to share the following B&W’s from a recent favorite family photography session of mine.  I thought this miniature series within the whole set was pretty neat and a great summary of Maren at 2 (can you believe she is two already?!).  I also realized I don’t often share B&Ws, and not sure why as they have such a unique beauty to them. I feel like because you are only focused on the content of what’s going on and not necessarily the scenery or the visual aesthetics. How does that saying go.. *googling* ah, yes..

“If you’re photographing in color, you will show the color of their clothes. If you’re photographing in black and white, you will show the color of their soul.” - Unknown

Well, it is so true. And I don’t know about you, but I need a little soul today.

Anyway, enjoy and another happy (belated) birthday to Maren! XO

chicago film photographers | j turns 2.

Monday, November 5th, 2012

I can’t believe that this year..

lil’ J turned 2.

And this time around J’s mom and I thought it would be fun to keep the tradition of spending her birthday together hanging out and getting a cupcake just like last year (by the way, did you know J’s mama is the founder of Bump Club Chicago?!).  So when J’s birthday finally came I went over to their place, finished breakfast and we all headed over to Bake in Wicker Park for a cupcake (which by the way makes the most amazing cupcakes.ever.).  After we stuffed ourselves with sweets and coffee (excuse me, milk for Miss J), we literally let J burn off all that sugar at the park in about 15 minutes and then headed back home again.

Ahh a very long and tiring last week has left me at a loss for words of how special it truly is for me to be a part of a family’s traditions and special memories.. and the photos I create from those moments are the least I can do to show that gratitude.  Thank you so so much Lindsay for inviting me to spend J’s birthday with you both, I already can’t wait for next year! XO

Oh, and if you’re interested in possibly having a family photography session to mark your little one’s birthday too, or even have me and my camera spend the day with you all, shoot me an email at info@simplybysuzy.com and let’s make it happen! ;)

chicago film baby photographers | mommy & me.

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

The other week these two were sweet enough to meet me in the park for some play time and photos.  I’ve been doing a lot of these impromptu ‘mommy & me’ mini-sessions, I just absolutely love them.

And looking through these film scans I’m also reminded of how often baby boys look like adorable little old men hehe Perhaps this Shel Silverstein poem explains it best:

“You know the stork bring babies,
But did you also know
He comes and get the older folks
When it’s their time to go?

Zooms right down and scoops them up,
Then flaps back out the door
And flies them to the factory where
They all were made before.

And there their skin is tightened up,
Their muscles all are toned,
Their wrinkles all are ironed out,
They’re given brand-new bones.

Ol’ bent backs are straightened up,
New teeth are added too,
Tired hearts are all repaired
And made to work like new.

Their memories are all removed
And they’re shrunk down, and then
The stork flies them back down to earth
As newborn babies again.”
