… as in, “sha-vee.” As in, short for Xavier. And clearly, this little guy is just as sweet as his name
I actually ended up visiting baby Xavi and his family three times – once at the end of fall before he was born and then twice again when he was 9 and 10 days old (the latter has become quite routine for our baby sessions during the winter months as there is a very limited window of good natural light this time of year.. *shakes fist at midwest weather gods*). Although it was more my pleasure than anything to return again and again as I have really enjoyed getting to know Xavi’s parents and am so thankful that a friend referred them to me! They made me many amazing cups of coffee to keep me going and during feedings we chatted about all sorts of things including their love for cycling, great books (anything Malcolm Gladwell is a ‘to-read list’ must!), how they met, where they grew up.. well, you get the idea
Anyway here are some of my faves from those two days of visits. Thank you so much again K&B for inviting me out to not only capture your journey to parenthood but for being so amazing, kind and hospitable to us! xoxo

…. is exactly the number of minutes I’ve spent working with this family and on their images. 90 minutes of laughing, playing and running around a field of wildflowers; 25 minutes to package up the rolls and drive to fedex in order to ship them off to the lab; 34 minutes downloading the film scans; and 17 minutes to put together this blog entry. I think that’s one of the main reasons why I wish I could work with film for all my sessions as I’ve been spending, what feels like, a lifetime in front of my computer screen editing images as of late. But before I continue I’d like to disclaim that I love digital photography and I could count off a bazillion reasons why it’s possibly more advantageous over film – it’s cheaper and (in some sense) easier to work with.. I can fix any of my technical errors in post processing later… sometimes film rolls get lost or damaged and there’s nothing you can do to rectify that (as I certainly had the latter happen for this session). But arguably there are always going to be positive and negative (no pun intended) aspects to anything in this life (could I have lost or damaged a memory card just as easily as a roll of film? Absolutely!), but it sure as hell is fun to figure all of these pros and cons out for myself by trying everything firsthand.
About a month ago a local photographer asked me if I would be willing to take on a bride & groom/family session for her since she had to last minute schedule surgery for that weekend. Thankfully for everybody I don’t know if the word “no” is even in my vocabulary so I immediately penciled it in my calendar. After talking to the bride about the details and what she was looking for, she said she wanted to have a casual portrait session with themselves and their two kids after having a small courthouse ceremony in downtown Naperville. She wanted to session to be simple and fun, that she loved a casual photojournalistic style and really wanted a vintage feel to come through in the images and possibly even something in a field at sunset. Okay – fun, simple, photojournalistic bride & groom session mixed with a family session? Oh, and all happening in a field at sunset? Ooh this was so worth squeezing into my schedule! When the day came around I woke up that morning and looked over at my film camera sitting on the nightstand (where it totally should not be permanently housed on) and the idea of using film crossed my mind since we now offer premium film sessions to clients but haven’t had a chance to market them much. I spent the next few hours going back and forth with myself, “Film? Digital? Maybe digital with some film?” What if I use film and it doesn’t work out how I expected it? What if I use digital and regret not trying? A friend suggested going with the third option of using digital and then working with my film camera just part of the time, but the more I thought about it the more I didn’t like the idea of having to juggle back and forth between the two completely different forms of media. I felt like having to continually switch mental gears between film and digital would take away from my full focus and creativity of shooting, so I decided to stick to my usual routine and go digital. Another hour of ambivalence and I did what any normal person in 2011 would do – I posted my dilemma on facebook for all to see and hoped maybe someone else could decide for me. Thankfully a very good friend encouraged me to go outside my comfort zone and take a risk and use just my film camera, and so I did. And after smiling ear to ear for the last hour as I look through these images over and over, I’ve decided it was the best risk I’ve taken in a while (albeit a small one, but a risk nonetheless).
And with that being said, here are some of my favorites from my time with this silly, loveable family. Stay tuned for more as the rest of my film rolls are developed

I had the BEST time getting to know this family better last month as we had a session to capture their sweet little Lucy. We started off watching the sun rise at the beach, we walked over to the park to finish up and then I followed them back home for story time before putting Lucy down for her afternoon nap. I think my favorite moment of the day was during story time when mom was reading a book to Lucy about how she will love her for the rest of her life, no matter what – she will love her happy face, and even love her sad face (though after our time together it seems Lucy only has a happy face lol). It was also a book about acceptance of others and not judging your peers for the circumstances of which they come from or the choices they make about their life. It’s okay to need some help, it’s okay to be a different color, it’s okay to talk about your feelings, it’s okay to make a wish.. I thought to myself, what a great message to send to your little ones every day
Anyway, here were some of my favorites from our morning together. Thank you so much to Lucy and her family for not only waking up at the crack of dawn to enjoy the beautiful sunrise with me, but for also letting me be a part of your family, even if but for a few hours

As most of you already know, Bump Club Chicago is one of my favorite resources for expecting and new mamas in the Chicagoland area, and likewise we’re one of their preferred photography vendors. So a few months ago I decided to further show my support by donating a gift session to be used as a grand prize for one of BCC’s Father’s Day contests. I have to be honest when I say that I was TOTALLY nervous giving away a session. Not only was it the first time I ever donated something but more importantly, who the heck was I going to end up working with?! ;)
After the contest was over, but a few hours later I got an incredibly warm and cheerful email from the winner telling me how excited she was to have won and she couldn’t wait to work with us. I noticed in her siggy that she was a mom blogger and of course went over to check out her site. Hours later of pouring through hilarious posts on the every day life of parenthood and adorable home videos of her toddler and two labs, Biscuit & Willy, I felt like it was I who had won the jackpot. A beautiful family that owned dogs and loved the hell out of each other – I was in family photographer heaven.
Anyway, the other week I went to their home for the first of their sessions and let me tell you, they filled every expectation I had in my mind for working with their family and then some. They were kind, loving, laid back and just so much fun to be around. Thankfully we got probably one of the last warm, sunny days of the year and so we spent it running in the backyard, playing in the dirt and throwin’ back a few beers & juice boxes as we enjoyed the sunset. Seriously. It.was.the best.

Thank you so much to their family for not only inviting me to their home to capture their life pre-baby Jack (and to Ava for giving me the best work out trying to keep up with her!), but for also making it one of the most memorable and fun sessions to date. Vasili and I can’t wait to come back for baby Jack’s arrival in just a few short months. Cheers to new babies and new friendships! xoxo

… for ice cream (photos!), or so this little guy’s mom would say
One of the best parts about my job is getting to literally watch families be created and grow over time and this family in particular I’ve had the pleasure of being there to capture from the very beginning. I first documented their life and love before baby Graham was even born; I watched him take his very first breath in the wee hours of a snowy, winter night; Vasili and I photographed him as he slept through peaceful dreams at one week old; I helped him welcome his first spring at 3 months and now again at 6 months old I returned to enjoy ice cream with him and his family on (well, what was supposed to be) a hot summer day at the beach. It wasn’t quite a hot summer day but what we got was even better – an empty beach after the rain. The wind was so crazy I honestly wasn’t sure how the session would go, but turns out torrential winds make Graham the happiest boy on earth. And if you don’t believe me just check out his big gummy smiles for yourself.
Thank you so much to this family for not only making it one of the best and most fun days I’ve had in a while, but for allowing me the honor, blessing and privilege of capturing their sweet little guy as he ventures through his first year of life. See you soon for a fall day at month 9!
