chicago film baby photographers | march of dimes.

Saturday, March 30th, 2013

Last summer this lil’ guy arrived at 32 weeks and 5 days, weighing 3 lbs 15 oz. Harrison spent 4 weeks at the Prentice NICU receiving amazing care, and the first week he spent under bili lights for Jaundice which as his mama says, “was the most difficult because we were limited to one hour of hold time each day.”

While Harrison and his family were in the NICU, I had the pleasure of going to the hospital and documenting a couple hours of their time with him – nursing & burping him, and lovin’ up on him.

This year Harrison’s family is walking for March of Dimes in honor of him and all the wonderful care he received thanks to organizations like MOD. You can click HERE to make a donation yourself, big or small, it all counts. Best of all, your donation will support –

* Research into stress and other factors that may trigger preterm labor
* Programs to educate pregnant women to recognize the warnings signs of preterm labor
* Tools to help health care providers find better ways to detect women who may be at risk for preterm labor.

Oh, and for all you parents out there with babies in the NICU, know that you WILL get through this. And you have this to look forward to… (see below for a very happy & healthy 8 month old Harrison :) )

(some side notes: Harrison’s diapers are non-toxic and made with materials such as sustainably harvested chlorine-free pulp, and courtesy of The Honest Company. Click HERE for more info on them. Also, this family’s living room as well as Harrison’s AMAZING nursery was designed and styled by Chicago designer, Bailey McCarthy of Peppermint Bliss, who I am officially now obsessed with her work)

above: Okay, it’s no secret. I love animals. But I am totally obsessed with hairless kitties (I kind of dream of having one someday when we have more space), so needless to say I was pretty psyched about getting Auggie in front of my camera (FYI: he feels like soft velvety suede).

above right: Is that Kelly green painted dresser not the most gorgeous piece of furniture you’ve ever seen? HERE is Bailey McCarthy’s original blog post on designing Harrison’s nursery, in which she explains (and I totally agree) “We wanted to get pieces he could grow with. A dedicated changing table is the dumbest piece of furniture marketed to new moms. You don’t need a specific changing table, just put a pad on any piece of furniture. There is no ideal height for a changing table that would require a special piece of baby developed furniture. Trust me, eventually you will be changing diapers on the floor, in your lap in public restrooms, on the hood of your car. You will figure it out. And then you will be stuck with some ugly changing table and be like “Tha Eff?”

chicago newborn baby & family photographers | bump club vip casting call #1

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

The other month I got together with a good friend, Lindsay Pinchuk, and owner of Bump Club Chicago – Chicago’s first and only social event group for new and expecting moms – for both pictures of her family and a little catching up.  At the end of our visit we took some time to brainstorm future plans for Simply by Suzy and Bump Club, ultimately deciding that it would be a fantastic idea to start doing monthly casting call sessions for her VIPs.  Not only am I totally psyched to support Lindsay and her moms through these sessions but I’m really looking forward to seeing what direction this goes in for impacting my artwork.. as an artist I crave trying new things, even if it’s something so small as working with a family purely out of my own creative desire, and I think this will be the perfect outlet to push myself creatively and meet some really awesome families along the way :)

Our first casting call was for a newborn session and took place last month here in the city.  We got together one rainy day (ahh the gloom and storms seem to be making a regular appearance these days..) and literally just hung out, chatted about life in NYC, great foodie spots to hit up (Vasili and I are BIG breakfast foodies!), and lots of feeding time.  We also did some of our usual sleepy shots but thought it would be pretty cool to leave her sweet onesie outfit on to make something new out of something old.   New ideas are always a hit or miss.. this one was definitely a hit for us.

Anyway here are but a few of my favorites from our morning together.  A big congrats to this VIP family on their new addition and also an even bigger thank you for allowing to us the pleasure of spending time with you and for capturing your most special new treasure.  We had so much fun getting to know you three and are looking forward to catching up again soon hopefully XO

For more info on how to become a Bump Club & Beyond VIP mom (or dad!) and have a chance at participating in one of our upcoming monthly casting calls, visit the following link or email info@bumpclubandbeyond.com: http://www.bumpclubandbeyond.com/bcb-vip-club/?s2member_seeking=page-20&s2member_level_req=1

chicago family photographers | fun in the sun.

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

You know sometimes you meet people who you just instantly click with and you want to hang out with again and again? Though I often find myself saying that about our clients, this family definitely fell into that category for me after first meeting them but a couple of weeks ago (and I was lucky enough to convince mom to hang out with me once more since then!).

When I first spoke to mom we were practically finishing each other’s sentences about our ideas for where and when to meet for pictures..

“I’m thinking something out in nature, in Spring-”

“Ooh you know I’ve been dying to do pictures outside in the daffodil glades that bloom for a few weeks in Spring, let’s – ”

“At the arboretum? Oh my gosh that’s exactly what I was thinking! Yes!”

Or so that’s generally how our initial conversation started :)

And then the day of our session arrived… and it rained. *sigh*

So we pushed back our date to meet up and we were lucky enough to finally get a bright, sunny morning to play around outside in our daffodils like we had all envisioned (as I always tell clients, these pictures are yours to treasure for life so good weather is absolutely worth waiting for!).  We played among the flowers, gave each other lots of kisses and tickles (well, they did all the work on that one), laughed (a LOT), and when it when all said and done I even convinced mom to come have a playdate with me and my ‘babies’ ;) (see below) One of my favorite parts about getting to know this family was how unbelievably sweet and adoring Addison was on her baby brother Ethan.  Before our session, when mom described her session vision to me she said she wanted to mostly capture the kids with just a few family shots in between.  She said “my daughter adores my son. People comment on it all of the time and I would really love to capture that affection and bond between the two of them.” :) For a family photographer to hear that is like winning the jackpot.  Siblings’ affection and interaction isn’t something that photographers can just make happen.  Though we can certainly coach kids into doing something that looks good on camera, you just can’t fake that kind of bond between brothers and sisters.  And mom wasn’t exaggerating at all as Addison truly loves her baby brother more than anything in the world.

Anyway, here are but a few of my favorites from our time that day so you can see for yourself just how much fun I had.  A big thank you again to this family for making it a really wonderful morning and for allowing me to capture them and all their awesomeness XO

above: Hard to believe these daffodils come and go so quickly. I went back to the same spot but a week later and most of them were already wilted away.. I suppose that’s part of what makes them so special.

above: this shot is just pure perfection for me. I love how you can see how gentle Addison is holding lil’ Suzy, how her (or his?) webby feet are just dangling out of relaxation, and Addison’s wispy hair all over the place.. love love love. I’ve already ordered an 8×10 print for my office to remember my time with the duckies by :)

chicago pregnancy photographers | spring blooms.

Monday, April 16th, 2012

Although I normally don’t blog my pregnancy sessions until baby arrives, I was so excited to see this family not long ago and couldn’t resist sharing a few ‘ahead of schedule.’  Not only are mom & dad old friends of mine that I haven’t seen in ages but they won this session with me through a facebook contest I did a while back!  I recall giving away a free Simply by Suzy session to one of our facebook fans to celebrate our first birthday last year and was beyond psyched when I found out who won, and so thankful we waited it out a bit because what was originally intended to be a family photography session for three ended up being.. a pregnancy & family photography session for four ;)  I also thought this was a great example to share and talk about how to get the most out of hiring a custom baby family photographer to photograph your own family – maintaining open communication about your needs and style as a client.  For my friends I can honestly say I would have done something totally different but after hearing mom’s detailed vision for her session and what she hoped I would capture, my own artistic vision completely changed.    She told me how she pictured images among nature to incorporate the blooming springtime since their family was blooming with its own new beginnings.. how much she loved the photographs in my portfolio depicting expecting mothers out in the woods.. she told me all about her sweet Owen who just turned two not long ago and the things she wanted to remember most about him at this point in his babyhood.  And after it’s all said and done, I couldn’t be more pleased with the direction that I was taken in with this session and I am even more grateful to have been able to reconnect with them. I can’t wait to return and meet their newest little one in just a few months :)

Anyway here are my favorites from our time together playing in the forest.  Thank you so much again Anna, Ray and Owen for spending an afternoon with me and my baby duckies.  I (we) had the best time ever and I am so excited to see you all again soon! XO
