chicago film baby photographers | march of dimes.

Saturday, March 30th, 2013

Last summer this lil’ guy arrived at 32 weeks and 5 days, weighing 3 lbs 15 oz. Harrison spent 4 weeks at the Prentice NICU receiving amazing care, and the first week he spent under bili lights for Jaundice which as his mama says, “was the most difficult because we were limited to one hour of hold time each day.”

While Harrison and his family were in the NICU, I had the pleasure of going to the hospital and documenting a couple hours of their time with him – nursing & burping him, and lovin’ up on him.

This year Harrison’s family is walking for March of Dimes in honor of him and all the wonderful care he received thanks to organizations like MOD. You can click HERE to make a donation yourself, big or small, it all counts. Best of all, your donation will support –

* Research into stress and other factors that may trigger preterm labor
* Programs to educate pregnant women to recognize the warnings signs of preterm labor
* Tools to help health care providers find better ways to detect women who may be at risk for preterm labor.

Oh, and for all you parents out there with babies in the NICU, know that you WILL get through this. And you have this to look forward to… (see below for a very happy & healthy 8 month old Harrison :) )

(some side notes: Harrison’s diapers are non-toxic and made with materials such as sustainably harvested chlorine-free pulp, and courtesy of The Honest Company. Click HERE for more info on them. Also, this family’s living room as well as Harrison’s AMAZING nursery was designed and styled by Chicago designer, Bailey McCarthy of Peppermint Bliss, who I am officially now obsessed with her work)

above: Okay, it’s no secret. I love animals. But I am totally obsessed with hairless kitties (I kind of dream of having one someday when we have more space), so needless to say I was pretty psyched about getting Auggie in front of my camera (FYI: he feels like soft velvety suede).

above right: Is that Kelly green painted dresser not the most gorgeous piece of furniture you’ve ever seen? HERE is Bailey McCarthy’s original blog post on designing Harrison’s nursery, in which she explains (and I totally agree) “We wanted to get pieces he could grow with. A dedicated changing table is the dumbest piece of furniture marketed to new moms. You don’t need a specific changing table, just put a pad on any piece of furniture. There is no ideal height for a changing table that would require a special piece of baby developed furniture. Trust me, eventually you will be changing diapers on the floor, in your lap in public restrooms, on the hood of your car. You will figure it out. And then you will be stuck with some ugly changing table and be like “Tha Eff?”

above: Auggie kept purring and rubbing his little wrinkly body up into my camera – so.sweet. Personality and looks, he was basically like a hairless Basil (our kitty).

chicago baby & family photographers | 3 months in winter.

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

I could start this post in a million different ways, but it would always end the same.. with me saying how unbelievably sweet, happy, kind and beautiful this trio is. Every time I come by for a session I feel like I’m spending time with friends, they’re always dressed in outfits better than I could ever imagine, and they indulge every request I make of them (including trekking through sinking mud across an apocalyptic-esque snowscape in the city just so I could get the ‘winter snow shots’ I wanted for P’s 3 month sesh).

Anyway here are some of my favorites from P’s 3 month mini-session, exactly what I had envisioned – lots of B&Ws along with cool tones and a little bit of snow to capture them all at this point in the year and her development (aka, totally boring lingo for most of you and for the few photogs who check out my blog, a shallow peek into my creative thought process).

Thanks again guys for being so awesome, treating me to coffee and best of all, cheers to seeing you all at least 3 more times in the next 9 months! XO

chicago film lifestyle photographers | new year, new look.

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Each year I try to think about how we can grow, how we can improve..

And this year I’m extra excited for a lot of BIG (and much needed) changes that I think will just really make what we do all the more seamless and enjoyable for our clients, and in the end provide you all with artwork even more incredible than you ever imagined. I’ll explain more when everything is fully finished and ready..

For now, I am almost done with updating our website and can’t wait to have it all completed :)

chicago lifestyle film photographers | flowers.

Friday, December 7th, 2012

Just a few photos of the flowers someone sent me to say thank you just a few weeks ago..

I think we can all agree that it’s these small gestures that mean so much, and they always seem to come at a time when you need them the most. So, thank you to the person who sent these to me.. not only did they brighten up my apartment but they brightened up an otherwise not-so-bright day.

And I urge you (yes, YOU, the person reading this) to think of one small gesture that you can do today to say thank you to someone in your life and do it – even if it’s but a handwritten note thanking a friend for inviting you out to dinner the other night :)

Oh and my favorite, Pistil & Vine off of Damen Ave in Chicago, is responsible for putting together such a beautiful arrangement <3

film family photographers in chicago | i am thankful for…

… my job.

I know that us photographers say it often, “Oh we have the best clients ever!” “I love my job because I work with such loving families!” And while that is often legitimately the case, I am honestly just so thankful that my journey as a professional photographer has introduced me to the most wonderful people, most of all other photographers.  Some of my closest friends are other photographers I’ve met through industry-related Facebook groups, connecting over a love for someone else’s work, taking a workshop, and even random coffee dates here in the city.

When I first met Brittany we got together for the usual coffee and work chit chat as she’s a local photographer in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago.  We talked for hours about exposure and lighting, business successes and failures, a little about each other and then she even asked me to critique a few of her images.. I always have a genuine desire to help others but at the time I felt a little silly – her work is no different than mine, what makes my opinion special? But that’s just it, no one’s opinion is more important than anyone else’s.  It’s just so so nice to find that support group of people who understand what you do, share your passion, understand the highs and lows and you can come to for advice because of all the above.  Since then Brittany and I have stayed in touch, her husband even swooped in to the rescue and rescued some invaluable birth photos on a dying hard drive years ago.. and then recently they asked me to come back and document their life at home as a family of three.  These are honestly my favorite type of sessions, where I come and literally just play with a family for hours on end and somehow pretend like I’m just another member of the group (and be good enough of an actress where they feel like it too).  We played dress up, snuggled in bed for stories, snuck in some photos of mom & dad while E took her afternoon nap, went down the street to a forest preserve where we played in the leaves and found some good sun flare.  Yep, it was a pretty awesome day :)

Anyway, thank you thank you THANK YOU so much Brittany & Nate for allowing me to come into your home and be one of your own for a day.  I had the best time ever and really looking forward to coming back for a slumber party and tulsi dolsha chai tea! XO
