chicago wedding photojournalism | denise & josh

Vasili and I photographed this couple’s wedding at the Hilton Orrington in Evanston not too long ago.  All can I say is, beautiful day, amazing people and wonderful love.  The day was filled with laughter and so many familiar faces as Denise grew up with some of my favorite mamas and past clients.

I’ll let you see for yourself what I mean in a slideshow below of some of the highlights of the day :) (operative word being some) Unfortunately you iPad users may not be able to see the set as there are just way too images for your poor little smart device to load, so I highly recommend hopping on your computer and checking them out.  And again, so many images that you may  need to just give it a second to load but I promise it’s worth the wait ;)

Love you all so much and thank you again and again Denise & Josh for allowing us the honor, blessing and privilege of capturing every moment of your special day to remember forever XO

Being in our apartment is starting to feel like staying in a relationship you know isn’t good for you anymore, but you can’t help but hold onto all those good times you’ve had over the years.  I’m sure we all can relate when I say that familiarity is a hard thing to let go of…  But despite a slue of building issues and maintenance problems, I love this little space because Vasili and I have built so many memories here.  Most of all I think I’m going to miss being able to watch the sun set every.single.day.. And on a really good day, at just the right minute, the light will even come in with a really deep reddish hue. It’s spectacular.

Anyway, here are a few images I took yesterday of Lucky snuggling in our LoveSac and enjoying the warmth of this special light.  Now off to somehow cram into my day finishing up work and apartment hunting.. (the latter I completely loathe. So please. If you or anyone you know is looking to rent their 2 bedroom condo, I beg of you.. send me their way)

chicago fine-art & photojournalism wedding photographers | meredith & julio.

Meet Meredith & Julio, whose wedding we photographed last September at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago.  I can’t imagine a more perfect way to end our 2011 wedding season (well, technically theirs was our second to last wedding).  This was also our first time photographing at the  Zhou B Art Center and I can’t wait to go back there in my off-time.  Between the literal size of the space, the modern feel created by the art pieces displayed around us, and the gorgeous lighting in both the garden area and the grafitti exhibit, Vasili and I were in photography heaven :)  It also helps that the wedding coordinator was the most organized and efficient person we’ve worked with on a wedding thus far (Leanne you are phenomenal!), in addition to the fact that couple themselves and their families were AH-MAZING people.  Meredith and I met a few times in the year leading up to her wedding to go over details of the day, learn more about her and her family, and the dynamic between her and her husband-to-be… one of my favorite stories we reflected on at our meet-up’s was when Meredith told me was how she found herself at one point placing so much emphasis on the money aspect of her wedding, and the disappointment and frustration she felt because maybe they couldn’t get married at a particular venue she wanted to or certain details weren’t in place that she thought should be.  One day she realized that none of that really mattered because the most important thing, the part that you can’t ever buy with money, was happiness and having a loving, supportive partner. And that, she already had :)

Anyway, check out the link below for some of our favorites and to see for yourself how amazing the entire day was for Meredith & Julio.

Thank you so much again M&J for inviting us out to capture your love.  We had the best time ever and we hope you cherish these images forever, we can’t wait to see you again soon hopefully! xoxo

chicago wedding photographers | I carry your heart.

After totally hitting it off with these two at our first meet up and again during our engagement session, I was so excited to photograph Ashleigh & Christopher’s wedding!   It was a beautiful ceremony held at a church in the NW suburbs, and then the reception followed at the White Deer Run Golf Club in Vernon Hills.   A couple of things that stuck out in my mind from that day: (1) Ashleigh surprised Chris with a secret engraving on the inside of his ring that said, “I carry your heart” which reminds me of one of my favorite E. E. Cummings poems (2) I normally am not one for formal portraits but the night before the wedding, I first met Chris’s parents who were so kind to say that they loved our work and were hoping if we could just take one nice portrait of the two of them together at the wedding as they hadn’t had one taken for such a long time (I believe they said almost 10 years!).  Even after talking with them for just a short amount of time, I could already sense that they were such sweet and fun people.. I honestly wished I had an hour or two to do a whole session with them :)

Anyway, here are but a few favorites from their wedding.  Thank you so much Ashleigh & Chris for inviting us to capture such an important day in your lives, we are so happy for you both and to now have you as friends! xoxo

“I carry your heart with me (I carry it in
my heart) I am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
                                i fear
No fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) I want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

Here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

I carry your heart (I carry it in my heart)”

When I first met Kendall we were both in the maternal/child health program at the UIC School of Public Health.  Her warm spirit and kind heart instantly made me love her!  A few years later, I was delighted to hear that not only had she gotten engaged but that she wanted Vasili and I to be there to capture their wedding which will take place next May by their home in Michigan.  For their engagement photos, we decided to do something here in Chicago to really get that city feel to their images.  Somehow I neglected to realize that the day of our session was scheduled for the first day of the Air and Water Show so we decided to meet really early in hopes of missing the 2+ million people that crowd around downtown and the lakefront.  It seriously could not have worked out any better as we were able to not only roam around the city unbothered but as I was driving back home the sun disappeared and it began to rain.

HOW HE PROPOSED

We had planned to go to a nice dinner for Sweetest Day last year (10/16/10), but after curling my hair and putting on my brand new heels, we realized that neither of us had made a reservation and the earliest we’d be able to sit down for dinner was 10pm.

So, we decided to go to a haunted hay ride and corn maze in Mason, MI.  Kevin had been asking me to go there for weeks, but I kept refusing since I hate haunted things.  But we didn’t have any other plans.  I changed into jeans and a sweatshirt and Kevin took an especially long time cleaning his car (I now know he was talking to my dad on the phone).

We waited in line for the hay ride for over an hour, and after embarrassing myself in front of a bunch of teenagers because I was so scared, we went in the “non-haunted” corn maze.  Since everyone else was in the haunted corn maze, we had the maze to ourselves and got lost several times.  We were being silly and running around in all the wrong directions.  At one point I turned around and Kevin was standing there with a ring!  The sinking mud we were standing in prevented him from being able to get down on one knee, but the proposal was so sweet and absolutely perfect.

Kevin had planned on proposing in the corn maze for weeks, which is why he kept asking me to go.  If I hadn’t kept turning down his offer to go on the haunted hay ride, we might’ve been engaged sooner!

Thank you so much Kendall & Kevin for hanging out with me for a few hours and making it an awesome morning!  Vasili and I can’t wait to be there on your big day next year :) (only 6 months already!!!)
