Sometimes parents request things, sometimes they don’t.. and sometimes there’s shots that mom & dad just really really want.

At today’s newborn session mom wanted nothing more than a photo of baby Harper in the basket of their family tandem bike as it had a lot of sentimental meaning behind it.  And to see the look on her face when we took this shot… priceless :)

I can’t tell you enough how much I was looking forward to this little one’s arrival!  I’ve been photographing his big sister Rylee for almost two years now and almost feel like a part of the family myself, so when his mama told me the good news that they were expecting I was SO beyond excited for them!  Between the amazing weather and Colton’s sweet, mellow disposition it was the perfect session (and though he normally just helps me with soothing the newborns and setting up, this time Vasili ventured from behind-the-scenes and took some photos too!).  Anyway here are but some of our favorites from our morning with baby Colton, keep your eyes peeled for part deux with the rest of the family :)

chicago newborn baby photographers | emma.

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

For those who don’t know, I had the amazing pleasure and opportunity of being trained under internationally-renowned newborn photographers, Carrie Sandoval & Brittany Woodall with Baby as Art, in April of 2010. Because of this we have been proud to offer a very unique way of capturing newborn babies and how they are often found in that first week of life – sleepy, oh-so-tiny, curled up and dreaming those elusive dreams that we will never know of… We are also proud to be the only premiere photography studio in Chicago that offers both these peacefully sleeping, fine-art baby portraits and family photojournalism in order to capture those initial days where you are bonding and connecting as a family for the first time.  To contrast with my post the other day which focused on the latter, I thought I’d share a sneak peek of my session with baby Emma to focus on the former :)

Meet Emma.  She was probably one of the tiniest full-term babes we’ve gotten to know and she slept like a champ the entire session. Until we dressed her at the end of her portraits at which time she slowly awoke from her slumber, looked up at her dad and gave the most hilarious expression as if thinking, “What the -?! Where am I? What is that huge black thing in my face and where the heck is my milk?!?” (okay, so that was clearly my projection of what baby Emma was thinking lol!).

But before I end this, I’d love to make a couple of announcements -

1.) First of all I’d like to say the biggest THANK YOU to a woman whose talent for knitting is beyond anything I’ve ever seen.  She is kind and wonderful, and has been making the the most amazing knit goods for us to use at our newborn sessions for the past year and I am so grateful to have found her.  If you’re a newborn photographer, you probably already know about her and if you’re a mother (or trying to think of a great gift for a mother-to-be) I highly suggest contacting Jen Howard about making a custom knit hat for your newborn.  They are the most fantastic keepsake gifts ever and if you get one before our session, I will most absolutely use it in your baby’s photos as they will both make for a fantastic memory box addition.

For more information on how to purchase your own knit keepsake items for your little one, please click on the following link: http://www.bythemoonlightcreations.com/

2.) I’d also like to make an announcement for those who don’t already know.  Simply by Suzy has been partnering with Bump Club & Beyond for the past year and a half and now we are working together to offer you the chance to win the most amazing Father’s Day Gift ever!  Be sure to check out the Bump Club & Beyond facebook page (CLICK HERE!) for more information on how to win a custom session with Simply by Suzy as well as a 20 page fine-art album to showcase and preserve your images forever.

3.) Which leads me to my next point… if you aren’t already familiar with Bump Club & Beyond it is Chicago’s first social event planning company for new and expecting moms.  I don’t support them nor work with them on any projects because I’m getting paid to or any reason other than the fact that I believe in it and believe it is a resource that every Windy City mama should be involved in (and one day when I have my own children you better believe I will be the first in line for all of their events).  It’s a great way to meet other moms whose little one’s share the same due date or age, a way to pamper yourself as an expecting mother at their fab events, and also if you become a VIP you will get 10x the amount you pay for your membership in discounts, free goodies and special opportunities (including 50 free custom-designed birth announcement cards from yours truly!).  No, it not too good to be true.  And yes, you should go to their website to find out more stat!

… and now, for some cuteness to make your Thursday morning that much better :)

chicago newborn photographers | belly stickers & kisses

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Newborn sessions are always a treat for me but I had an especially fun time the other day shooting alongside a friend who was visiting Chicago for a newborn session and kind enough to invite me along (she is an amazing newborn, baby and family portrait photographer based out of Iowa).  In addition to photographing baby’s first moments, capturing the love between a newborn and other members of the family such as older siblings is such a joy for us photographers.  Though personally fulfilling, it is almost never easy lol  I mention this aspect of a newborn session because, being the second shooter yesterday, my varied perspective reminded me of this as I watched Shannon work with baby E’s older sister Josie.

At first she asked little Josie to give her brother a big ole’ kiss right “there!” on his forehead… in typical toddler fashion, Josie politely declined.

Maybe whispering secrets down a telephone chain to Josie will do the trick…

… though it certainly got the biggest, heart-warming smile on her face, she coyly declined again our request to snuggle up with baby E.  Perhaps some stickers will work.

After putting stickers on her belly and Shannon’s forehead (whom I give extra kudos to – a good photographer will always oblige a request that will make a toddler happy.. even if it involves a little self-deprecation lol!), we finally got Josie to lay a big smooch on her baby brother.  Whether it be stickers or treats, bribery is always a great plan B for getting siblings under the age of 5 to cooperate if mom and dad are okay with it.

… and after it’s all said and done, the end result is always worth the extra effort :)

chicago newborn photographers | new friends

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

I spent a large portion of today getting to know a local photographer who was kind enough to ask me if I’d lend a pair of hands to her for a twin newborn session.  I happened to have the day off so I decided to tag along and it was such a blast!  Julia is new to the area and I’m happy to now be able to call her a friend :)  Here’s a few ‘behind-the-scenes’ pics to give you an idea of how it went…
