As time goes by I’m realizing that I prefer to go by Suzy ‘story teller extraordinaire’ instead of Suzy ‘the photographer.’

Last month my good friend Shannon Dodd and I went out to Omaha to spend 2 days with this family since baby #2 had just arrived. Shannon is an amazing newborn photographer so she worked with these four to make some incredibly awesome portraits, while I just lingered in the shadows and photographed her time with them and documented the overall experience of us being there. And despite a 10 hour day of shooting, this family still let me have some time with them to do my own portraits the morning before we left. I had so much fun and honestly all of the circumstances were kind of unusually perfect.. Alec slept like a rock the whole 2 days, June was at that age where you can start telling her what to do and she enthusiastically cooperates, the family was super down to earth, kind and really let us in to their lives.. And by that I mean they just went about their normal routine as if we had been friends forever (trust me, I know that’s not always easy to do). I especially connected with their little girl June, and I like to think that my connection with her, Shannon and the whole family in general really shows through in the images (I even got in some of the pictures too if you can find me ;) ).

Anyway, a big THANK YOU to June, Alec, and their mom & dad for inviting Shannon and I over to capture such an incredible time for them, and making it the best damn 2 days I’ve had in a while xoxo

(note: if you are a potential client and want to get a little more of what you see here, don’t hesitate to let me know so I can send you details. Shannon and I will gladly spend a couple of days getting to know you too ;) )

chicago film photographers | self worth.

chicago film photographers

I feel like exposing a little about myself today.. I feel like allowing myself to be a bit vulnerable..

But to lighten the mood somewhat, I think I’ll make this post like a compliment sandwich :) So here, I’ll start with the first piece of positive bread – I am living my dream. I may not be super rich, I may not be famous, but every day I wake up next to my love, healthy, and am able to thus far help to provide a roof over our heads by doing what I love which is making artwork for families.

Now for the hard to chew middle of my sandwich.. putting myself and my artwork, my inner creative voice, out there for the world to see and have my living depend on that has led to my self-worth becoming so intertwined with it, often making it incredibly difficult for me to separate the two. And by that I mean, if I have a good day and post some pretty pictures that lots of people ‘like’ on facebook or comment on, I feel great. If I get a letter back from a client telling me how much they love their photographs, I feel even better. I’m awesome, I’m on top of the world. I mean something and I feel like the world is rotating in just the right direction and at just the right speed. On the other hand, if I make a mistake in my business, or perhaps a series of images gets rejected for publication, I feel awful. I am a loser, and I could have (no, should have) done better. My artwork doesn’t matter, and what purpose is there to what I’m doing.. I am worth nothing.

Does this feeling at all resonate with you?

Anyway, I’m not sure what my point is in all of this except to say that if you feel this way too, I think it’s just normal. And I’m right there with ya, especially today.

With that being said, I’ll end with the second piece of positive bread – today I am alive and still living my dream.

Oh, and I just had the best breakfast at Lula Cafe.. yum. That place is the bee’s knees I tell ya.

chicago family & baby photographers | emails that make me smile

Friday, January 11th, 2013

A few days ago I had a really, really fun newborn photography session with a family of four.  And then this morning I got the sweetest email in my inbox from mom, who sent me a picture of her toddler ‘photographing’ her new baby sister..

“I want to take pictures of baby sister like Suzy!” is one of the captions that accompanied the photo.

Despite popular belief, it is not always easy being a small business owner.  In fact, behind the beautiful blog posts and the seemingly glamorous Facebook status updates of ‘what we’re up to,’ are a lot of 80 hour weeks and sleepless nights, many days where I give up spending time with my family & friends so I can personally deliver items to a client’s home or take the extra time to work on an order that probably could wait until the morning.. so even just a simple thank you note or taking a few moments to email me about how much your kids had fun at the session.. truly those small gestures are the ones that keep me going and are so beyond appreciated xoxoxo

chicago film photographers | it’s cool to be square

Thursday, January 10th, 2013

For Christmas my parents got me a Rolleiflex camera and book of some Vivian Maier work (a nanny from Chicago who documented her life from her Rollei)..

… and I just got back the first images I took with her.  Not bad, I must say! But it will for sure require some practice with the focus..  Typically cameras have a viewfinder you look through with your eye, but what’s neat about the Rollei cameras is that it has a waist level viewfinder.  This pretty much just means you pop open the top, and let the camera hang at your waist (kind of like how Vivian is holding it in the picture above) and look down as you compose/focus.  It is pretty fun to try something different, but also feels quite strange to me.. again, it will for sure require some practice and getting used to it more.

What I love the most about the Rollei though is the square format.  There is just something I really love about square images and the composition it allows you to work with (so think 5×5, 10×10, 12×12, 20×20 prints up on your wall).

Anyway here are the few shots I took that actually turned out :) And if you have a cooperative subject (an immobile baby, a child who will take my direction, or even you and your spouse..) you just might see me pull this baby out and take some photos of you with it :)
